Kitten Rescue

Attempt to lure to cat into cageWe saw the kitten again two days ago. And this time we tried a few times using food to lure her into our pet carrier.

But the little rascal knew what was up. She didn’t fall for the trap in the both times that we tried. After the attempts, both us and the kitten were too stressed. So both sides gave up. We ended up just sitting there watching each other doing nothing.

And yesterday when we saw her again, she appeared a little weaker than the last time we saw her. At one point, I was able to get pretty close to grab her. The kitten’s reflexes handed her the advange of speed, and she quickly dashed away.

I wonder if that ruined her trust for me. Maybe the next time it’d be much harder to get her into the pet carrier.

A Mild Case of Repetitive Strain Injuries

If anyone ever wondered if sitting in front of a computer can cause a repetitive strain injury, wonder no more. It got me.

Just out of the blue one day when I was typing, my pinkie suddenly stopped working. It felt as if the damn finger didn’t exist. Freaking stupid pinkie.

I ended up using the index finger to reach the pinkie keys —

,

1
return

,

1
shift

… etc. You don’t really appreciate the pinkie until you’ve lost the use of it.

But not to worry. The finger came back a couple of days later.

Heaven and Earth

Abandoned kittenAt first we noticed there were two kittens living under our neighbor’s boarded yard. But for the past few days, one of them never showed up. And we never saw the mother with the one remaining kitten anymore. So I decided to give the poor thing some treats despite my warning to Grace not to give any of the stray cats any in fear of them bringing dead squirrels as a token of their appreciation.

I guess that’s part of being human. It’s impossible to witness a kitten’s health deteriorate as we walk by her underground hideout on a daily basis. We decided we’d try to trap her the next time we see her and send her to the humane society.

I ended up giving her a small handful of cat food. For a kitten her size (about a month old), she sure could eat. She finished the whole damn pile!

And then we came home to this sight…

Seriously, nature can’t be crueler. What a difference a home makes. One of my cats also has taken great interest in computers. It would be nice if she can get a job. What a dorky cat.

Babies Are Parasites

Brian had mentioned the other day that babies (including fetuses) are basically parasites. Come to think of it… yeah, they are! Fortunately this parasite is crucial to pass on our precious chromosomes.

Our baby should be a fully matured fetus now that’s it’s his 37th week in the womb. And Grace’s belly is really “popping” big. Sometimes it is mind boggling to try to comprehend how a single fertilized cell can be developed into a full grown human only to slowly self-destruct. And through all this, humans still manage to f*ck every other species over.

Another odd observation I made: Grace’s late pregnancy stage symptoms are manifesting themselves on to me as well — swollen fingers (and feet) and heartburns. Is that even normal?

And once again, Google proved to be a handy resource. Do dads-to-be experience hormonal changes? pretty much answered my question. It’s been documented that father-to-bes can also go through hormonal changes and share some of the experiences as the expecting mother.

Recently researchers at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada have demonstrated that fathers-to-be undergo hormonal changes as the birth of their child approaches.

And we thought we had it easy… Damn it! Stupid hormonal changes.

Over the weekend, I also strapped in the infant car seat, put up the “Baby Onboard” sign and installed the rear windshield shade. We also did some last minute baby shopping for the remaining items on our baby registry.

Materially, we should be ready. But mentally, something tells me we I can never be ready.

Bill Clinton and His World View

Bill Clinton image A couple of years ago, former U.S. president Bill Clinton delivered an excellent speech at The University of Texas at Austin.

The elegance and sophistication of his speech makes him by far the best public speaker I have seen. Steve Jobs does give great presentations from time to him. But he’s a salesman and that’s what he does best. However, people who attend his presentations usually walk away with reality distortion field affect. Bill Clinton, on the other hand, nails his points with impeccable logics and concisely worded reasons. I can’t see how anybody can debate with him and win.

I tried recording the live streaming of the speech but failed. I am so worried that someday it may not be accessible anymore. But in the meantime, his speech can be accessed from Apple’s site here.

I’d also visit the William J. Clinton Foundation website for transcripts and videos from his other speeches. Very inspirational.

MythTV — Part IV — If It Works on Windows…

I finally got my replacement PVR-150 card from Buy.com a couple of days ago. Immediately I put it back into the Dell Precision 410 box where I have Windows 2000 installed from the last exercise. Fingers crossed.

At first Windows complained about drivers not being properly loaded and other related usual crap that is normal for a Windows operating system. The only way to really “fix” this was to uninstall all the drivers and related apps and reinstall them from scratch. So I did; and that did the trick.

Half an hour after I got everything installed; I got the DVR app that came with Hauppauge working. It receives signals, captures, pauses and does everything else. Even the remote worked flawlessly. So hardware is fine.

Then I downloaded and installed BeyondTV from SnapStream since I am already running Windows and have been told that BeyondTV is very easy to work with.

And sure enough, BeyondTV worked like advertised except that features allowed in the demo version were so limiting that there was no way for me to truly evaluate the package. And SnapStream is asking for $80 for the package. That’s $80 too much for me. And besides, I am determined to have a Windows-free home computing environment.

I think I will go back to trying on Fedora Core 3 again when I get more time. Between running errands in preparation for the new baby, my freelance job, classes and all the miscellaneous stuff that’s going on, time is getting more and more scarce. So whatever happens, I’ve got to get it to work before the baby arrives or else I might never get to it anytime soon… 🙁

Baby Hiccups

Yesterday Grace came to my desk and put my hand on her tummy. At first I didn’t feel anything. But after a few seconds, I felt a few sudden movements. Grace said the fetus is having hiccups (or that’s what the book says).

Another related story: The other day we went to the mall to get the mattress for the baby. We stopped by at the food court to get a bite. Sometimes the fetus moves when Grace’s eating. The book says eating is a pleasant experience for the fetus. Moments later, Grace tried some of my spicy chicken. I guess the baby somehow “tasted” but was surprised. So he gave Grace a strong kick. Oops~ sorry.

Blogging + Video = Vlogging

Great. I finally caught on to blogging. But now this new “Vlogging” thing is slowly creeping into people’s RSS feeds.

Where do people find time for all this?! Damn it.

UPDATE: Like I was saying, Vlogging is catching on. Someone in NYC caught this on his video phone about a bank employee and a customer going off on each other.

White House Silence on Rove’s Role

The New York Times is reporting that the White House Silence on Rove’s Role in C.I.A. Agent Leak. Until the unraveling of the man behind the leak, the Bush Administration repeatedly assured the public its seriousness in punishing the source of this life-threatening leak. But now Bush all of a sudden is quite and has nothing to comment?

“Are you going to fire him?” the president was asked twice in a brief Oval Office appearance with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore. Both times, the president ignored the questions.

Then a White House aide signaled that the session was over. “Out those doors, please,” the aide told journalists. “Thank you very much.”

When it comes down to punishing others, even without a shred of evidence, Bush’s administration was all over the place and showed “resolve”. But when it comes to punishing one of their own, where’s the “resolve” and strong stance now?

I have no sympathy for the jailed journalist as well. It’s one thing to cover a sensational story for the sake of journalistic creativity. But when someone else’s life can be in danger because of your story, especially that of a public servant in a sensitive position, journalistic integrity should take a back seat and allow the human side of the journalist to take control. Everyone’s a human first; all other roles we play in our lives are secondary and are simply labels we carry with relatively meaningless substance.
