{"id":61,"date":"2005-07-11T13:19:45","date_gmt":"2005-07-11T20:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wiredatom.com\/blog\/?p=61"},"modified":"2005-12-23T20:53:52","modified_gmt":"2005-12-24T04:53:52","slug":"students-prfer-itunes-over-free-napster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wiredatom.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/11\/students-prfer-itunes-over-free-napster\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Prefer iTunes Over Free Napster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>E-Commerce Times<\/i> reported a survey, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecommercetimes.com\/rsstory\/44531.html\">Students Use iTunes, Even With Free Napster at Hand<\/a> which indicates that seven out of ten students will still get their music from Apple&#8217;s market-leading iTunes software even when they are offered a free service to Napster&#8217;s lame subscription model.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/napster_logo.gif\" width=\"205\" height=\"53\" class=\"centered\" alt=\"Napster Logo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What does this say? Ease of use and good karma will prevail. Copycats like <a href=\"http:\/\/music.msn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MSN Music<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/music.yahoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yahoo! Music<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walmart.com\/music_downloads\/introToServices.do\" target=\"_blank\">Walmart Music<\/a> (yes, even Walmart is in the game), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buy.com\/retail\/default.asp?loc=18250\" target=\"_blank\">Buy.com Music<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.napster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Napster<\/a> and countless others continue to feed on Apple&#8217;s continued innovation. This is not to say that those other services may still have one thing or two to teach Apple.<\/p>\n<p>But will Apple take notice? Apple probably doesn&#8217;t care. It&#8217;s happy where it&#8217;s at right now&#8230; that is, until someone starts to steal its market share.<\/p>\n<p>A number of reports (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/resource\/article\/0,aid,121736,pg,1,RSS,RSS,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internetnews.com\/xSP\/article.php\/3518001\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/money\/2005\/07\/06\/technology\/napster_dell.reut\/?cnn=yes\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) are saying Dell will be partnering with Napster in an attempt to unseat Apple from its crown in the music download business. This represents the first serious attempt from a major company to target Apple&#8217;s market share.
