Reports (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/home\/feeds\/ap\/2005\/01\/11\/ap1753405.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/mld\/siliconvalley\/business\/columnists\/gmsv\/11462168.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/6821607\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) have been bruising Apple&#8217;s position on its environmental and electronic recycling policies. <\/p>\n<p>To counter the negative publicity (or perhaps a heart-felt action for a better world), Apple launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/environment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Apple and the Environment<\/a> campaign, a site dedicated to the environmentally-friendly efforts Apple is making.<\/p>\n<p>At first I thought Computer TakeBack Campaign was a little fishy: There are dozens of companies &#8220;polluting&#8221; the environment with lead-based computer components (namely, ahem-Dell-ahem), why would an organization targeting a relatively small company like Apple?<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, Ted Smith (tsmith[at]igc.org), the man behind the campaign, has been doing this for quite a number of years. I found trails of his environmental messages dating back to 2000. <\/p>\n<p>Granted, millions of iPods have been sold worldwide, there are still far more Dell or HP computers in the world than computers and iPods made by Apple. And who&#8217;d, in their right mind, <strong>THROW AWAY<\/strong> an iPod? I&#8217;d gladly throw away my aging Dell PC versus my first generation iPod (which I sold last year for $120!).<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/news\/article\/0,aid,119347,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\">this PC World report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>PC vendors shipped 177.5 million units during 2004&#8230;<br \/>\n.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\n.<br \/>\nIn the fourth quarter, Dell edged out Hewlett-Packard in what is usually a strong quarter for HP. Dell shipped 8.8 million units during the quarter to HP&#8217;s 8.2 million units.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This reminds me of <a href=\"http:\/\/lxer.com\/module\/newswire\/view\/38971\/\" target=\"_blank\">Following Bill Gates&#8217; Linux Attack Money<\/a> article published a while back.
