{"id":149,"date":"2005-08-03T17:16:19","date_gmt":"2005-08-04T00:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wiredatom.com\/blog\/?p=149"},"modified":"2005-08-04T01:04:09","modified_gmt":"2005-08-04T08:04:09","slug":"and-a-chinese-name-we-have","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wiredatom.com\/blog\/2005\/08\/03\/and-a-chinese-name-we-have\/","title":{"rendered":"And A Chinese Name We Have"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For your inquisitive minds, Bryan has been given a Chinese name as of this morning: Yong-si.<\/p>\n<p>For the Chinese-literate folks, it looks like this: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/bryan_chinese_name.png\" width=\"47\" height=\"18\" valign=\"middle\" alt=\"Yong-si Chu\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let me explain&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/bryan_name_yong.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" valign=\"middle\" alt=\"Yong character\" \/> reads <i>Yong<\/i> = reading or singing poetically<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/bryan_name_si.gif\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" valign=\"middle\" alt=\"Si character\" \/> reads <i>Si<\/i> (or <i>Xi<\/i>, thanks to lack of spelling standards in Taiwan) = peaceful, happy, bright, prosperous; this was also part of the name of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qing_dynasty\" target=\"_blank\">Qing Dynasty<\/a> emperor, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kangxi_Emperor\" target=\"_blank\">Kangxi<\/a>, in the 1600s. He is considered to be one of the greatest emperors in Chinese history by historians. One of his achievements was the compilation of the great Chinese Dictionary, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kangxi_Dictionary\" target=\"_blank\">Kanxi Dictionary<\/a>, which was the most complete reference to all Chinese characters at the time. It is still being frequently referenced to even today.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a lot of meanings packed into two little words. I suppose all parents go through something like this &#8212; complex feelings for the child to succeed and be happy in life, but at the same time can&#8217;t help but feel worried for him.<\/p>\n<p>So with the name, we completed Bryan&#8217;s birth certificate as well as a social security number today. He&#8217;s become citizen of a country where Grace and I have worked so hard, but failed, to become. <\/p>\n<p>When we travel internationally, things might get a little bit complicated.
